Fonda Café and Bar are your pitstops inside The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Fonda Café is located on the first floor of the museum and accessible with a valid museum entry. It is a pit stop within the Stedelijk, a place to pause, recharge, and stay connected to the museum’s creative energy.

“Our aim was to design a menu that feels familiar yet elevated. We focus on dishes that cater to the needs and pace of museum visitors without compromising on quality.”

Fonda's menu pays tribute to familiar flavours, with a refined touch. Everything is prepared in-house from scratch each day, using high-quality, thoughtfully sourced ingredients: seasonal, organic where possible, and primarily vegetable-forward, with fish as an occasional addition. With signature offerings created to become go-to favourites, Fonda ensures both locals and tourists can rely on its classic yet sophisticated flavours.

Located in the light-filled entrance hall of the Stedelijk Museum, Fonda Bar is open to the public.
We serve specialty coffee from La Cabra, a renowned roastery in Aarhus, Denmark, known for its light roast, single-origin beans with bright, nuanced flavour. Our drinks menu also includes matcha and other Japanese teas, housemades lemonades, and a few spirited options, such as natural wine and beer from a local brewery.

On the counter, you’ll find an assortment of housemade baked goods, cookies, and focaccias, all made fresh each morning in the Fonda Café kitchen. Take something to go, or enjoy it here with a drink and a view over Museumplein.

A fonda traditionally served as a community-focused, modest inn for travellers. A warm, informal gathering spot where locals and visitors could enjoy simple dishes.

Fonda channels the essence of a classic American luncheonette with a central counter, self-service setup, an open kitchen, and communal tables. Fonda Café and Bar are pitstops within the Stedelijk, places to pause, recharge, and stay connected to the museum’s creative energy. Fonda comes from the same team behind Oficina, a canteen and food design studio based in Amsterdam-West. Led by co-founders Zana Josipovic and Naiara Sabandar, the team combines a love for food with thoughtful design to create spaces where community and quality are at the forefront. With Fonda, they aim to redefine museum cafe culture. Fonda marks a significant step in Oficina’s broader vision to blend food, design, and community.

“We challenged ourselves to redefine a museum cafe as we know it. From the serving trays to the uniforms and menu design, every detail has been thoughtfully considered to bridge tradition and modernity, creating an inclusive space for everyone.”
Fonda and Oficina both offer catering services, each in their own way. Fonda is a leading catering partner of the Stedelijk and caters for museum events from working lunches and aperitivo spreads to shared dinners and elegant seated meals. Every menu is tailored to suit the tone, flow, and often the theme of the gathering, complementing the museum’s bold atmosphere with food that’s thoughtful, flexible, and full of flavour. Our aim is to let the event take centre stage, with the food enhancing the experience in quiet, memorable ways. For custom requests beyond the museum, our food design studio at Oficina develops concept-driven food experiences in collaboration with institutions and brands. Our work spans culinary production, experience design, and in-depth research, often combining these elements within a single project. Whether for a product, shaping the identity of a new restaurant, or one-off event, we respond to each brief with curiosity, care, and a playful eye for new rituals.

The interior design of Fonda was led by Paul Cournet and the acclaimed Rotterdam-based architecture firm Cloud, as part of an overarching transformation inside the museum. Each element is designed to create a relaxed, inviting atmosphere, from the earthy green and brown tones to the round forms characteristic of classic diners. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the Stedelijk Chair, a special piece commissioned by the Stedelijk from renowned designer Sabine Marcelis, featuring distinctive handmade aluminium seating. The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Netherlands' leading institution for modern and contemporary art and design, has been at the forefront of the international art scene for over 125 years. Its world-class collection of 100,000+ works features iconic artists like Malevich, Kusama, Matisse, and Koons. Beyond art’s aesthetics, the Stedelijk addresses critical ethical and social issues, constantly reinterpreting its collection to stay relevant for today and the future.
